Shane Lowry has ended up being the talk of The Open for all the wrong reasons and after struggling through his third round, the Irishman has been commenting on the last 24 hours.
Lowry was given a two stroke penalty after his practice swing moved the ball a fraction and since then, it’s derailed his quest for a second Open win.
Scottie Scheffler praised Lowry’s handling of the situation but ultimately, it has put a black mark over what should have been a great week for Lowry.
To cap things off, the Irishman has then been ill overnight and had to battle through his third round to simply get to 18 and post a score.
In the end, Lowry came into the clubhouse at three over for the tournament and well out of contention but as expected, all the talk was about his penalty.

It’s plain as day that Lowry is frustrated by the penalty he was issued. Whether or not people think he knew and didn’t admit it, is open to debate but at the end of the day, it has cost him.
With golfers expected to maintain integrity and honesty in their game, rulings like this always bring awkward questions.
Indeed, for Lowry, there wasn’t much else to say as he revealed how the reaction around the course had been.
“I’m not too keen to talk on it too much. I think we said enough about it last night. Quite supportive, I would say, from the other players. They all feel bad for me that two shots is a lot to give up. Yeah, I don’t really have much else to say actually,” Lowry revealed.
Lowry was open and honest about the situation last night and clearly, it is still bothering him.

As if having to deal with the two shot penalty wasn’t hard enough, Lowry also revealed he was overcome with a sickness bug in the night.
Clearly, it affected his play in round three and once again, you could see the frustration etched on his face.
“Yeah, not great. No, not great. I haven’t eaten today yet. I tried to get a protein drink down me after eight holes, and I felt like throwing up all over the place. Yeah, it’s been a tough day, but I’m not going to make excuses. I played poorly today and obviously had a bad finish,” Lowry admitted.
“I felt like I ground it out really well to get to 1-under for the day through 13. Then a bad shot on 14 and a little bit of a bad break as well. Yeah, it’s hard. It’s hard to take. You get home late and have to dust yourself off. Wake up at 2:30 with cramps in my stomach. I know we have it in the house. Ivy had a couple of days ago. Wendy had it yesterday. Me and Iris have it today. It will be gone by the holidays next week. So at least that’s a plus.”
All in all, this has been a week to forget for Lowry and he’ll be hoping to dust himself off quickly and get back to his best as quick as possible.
