Angel Hidalgo overcame fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm in a play-off to win the Spanish Open at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Rahm was frustrated after round two, but he persevered and made it all the way to 14 under after four rounds.

Hidalgo joined him there, with the duo then locking horns in a play-off on home soil at the DP World Tour event in Madrid.

They both managed to birdie the first extra hole, with Hidalgo then repeating the feat as Rahm’s chip went wayward.

Hidalgo, who missed a birdie putt on the 18th to win in regulation, now has his maiden DP World Tour title.

Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood message Angel Hidalgo after Spanish Open win

He led the way since Thursday, with Rahm having started the final round two shots back, with the pair joined by another Spaniard in David Puig.

The messages of congratulations have since come in for the champion, with Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood among those messaging Hidalgo.

The Englishman wrote on X: “What an amazing event in an amazing city with amazing fans!! Thank you so much for the support, congrats to Hidalgo and thanks to Acciona for supporting the tournament. Love Madrid.”

Irishman Lowry meanwhile commented on footage of the winning putt on X, saying: “This is what it’s all about. Congrats Angel Hidalgo.”

Robert MacIntyre loved what he saw at the Spanish Open

Fleetwood can certainly be happy with his week, having shot 10 under to finish T3 alongside several players.

One of them was Puig, who helped represent the first all-Spanish final group at the event since 2019, when Rahm partnered Rafa Cabrero Bello and Samuel Del Val.

Lowry meanwhile finished T13 on six under, with LIV Golf duo Patrick Reed and Tyrrell Hatton both finishing T10 on eight under.

Fellow LIV star Rahm wants to play on all tours, with the breakaway tour still at odds with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

Perhaps it was, therefore, a lucky break for the DP World Tour that Rahm was narrowly beaten by Hidalgo in Madrid.

Along with Fleetwood and Lowry, the Spanish Open also caught the eye of Robert MacIntyre, who wrote on X: “That’s what the DP World Tour is all about.”
