Sergio Garcia has explained what makes Valderrama one of his favourite golf courses in the world as the 44-year-old prepares to tee it up in Spain for the latest LIV Golf event.

While many of the world’s best are already in Scotland ahead of The Open Championship next week, LIV Golf’s stars are in Spain, preparing to take on one of the most iconic courses on the continent.

Valderrama became the first course outside of the United States and the United Kingdom to host a Ryder Cup, when Seve Ballesteros led Europe to a dramatic win in his home country 27 years ago.

Sergio Garcia would not make his Ryder Cup debut for another two years, but he certainly has plenty of history at the course, having won the Andalucia Masters three times on the DP World Tour between 2011 and 2018.

Sergio Garcia shares why Valderrama is one of his favourites courses

So he will be hoping that that bodes well ahead of LIV Golf Andalucia this week. In his press conference ahead of the event, Garcia was asked about previously labelling Valderrama one of his favourite courses, and why exactly that is.

“For me, there’s nothing written about likes and dislikes but for me, I just love the way it plays, I love how it’s not a long course, but it makes you think every single tee shot, every single shot to the greens, you have to think about what you want to do,” he said.

“I think it’s probably one of the few courses that probably makes you use every single club in the bag, which is good to see, we don’t get to see that that often in some of the newer designs, so I think that, to me, in my personal opinion, that’s what makes a great golf course.”

Spaniard will need no extra motivation ahead of LIV Golf Andalucia

Of course, the disappointing news is that Garcia will not be involved at The Open Championship next year after failing to make it past final qualifying. So he will be particularly keen to make a statement this week.

Garcia sits seventh in the individual standings on LIV this season, while his Fireballs GC team are down in eighth in the team standings. So they have plenty of ground to make up.

The 2017 Masters champion probably does not need any further motivation ahead of a tournament in his home country, but he will also be aware that if he wins this week, plenty will find it strange that he is nowhere to be seen at Royal Troon.
