When it comes to the greatest rounds of Scottie Scheffler’s career, it is probably fair to say that the world number one’s coach Randy Smith has more than a fair share of options to pick from.
Scottie Scheffler has been the best player on the planet for the best part of three years now. But the 28-year-old seemed to move to another level during the 2024 season as he won nine times worldwide.
What was just as remarkable as the number of wins was the scale of the victories. He clinched his second major title at the Masters, while he also won a number of the flagship events on the PGA Tour. And of course, he won the Olympic gold medal at Le Golf National.
Many will remember how controlled his performance at Augusta National was, while his back nine at the Olympics was astounding. But perhaps there was another round which was even better than anything he did in any of his wins in 2024.
Scottie Scheffler’s coach shares the best round he’s seen him play
One of the moments of the season came at the PGA Championship – outside of the gates at Valhalla. Scheffler was arrested as he attempted to enter the property ahead of his second round.
Somehow, he managed to make it back to Valhalla to tee off on Friday. And he went on to post a 66 to move into the top 10 and in a tie for fourth. And speaking on the PGA Tour Originals documentary about Scheffler’s year, his long-time coach Randy Smith suggested that he has never seen anything more impressive on the course from his player.

“The thing that still jumps out at me is the round in Louisville after the incident, and how he went out and didn’t get to do his routine, went out on the practice tee, we talked for a second. We said, ‘look, it’s all up here, get after it’,” he said.
“All these people were just picking him up. ‘Scottie, Scottie’. There was a warmth out there that day.
“That’s probably the best round I think I’ve ever seen him play.”
How many times Scheffler broke 66 in historic 2024 season
It probably does not get spoken about enough how Scheffler was somehow able to focus on his golf game on that Friday. Ultimately, the emotional toll appeared to catch up with him on Saturday as he fired a 73 to fall out of contention.
But he still managed to finish inside the top 10. The only major in 2024 where Scheffler finished outside the top 10 came the following month at the US Open.
Ultimately, Scheffler shot just 19 better rounds in 2024 than his Friday round at the PGA Championship.

When you consider how good he was throughout the season, as well as some of the courses he played on – his worst round at this year’s Travelers Championship was a 65 – it is frightening to think of what he could still be capable of.
