Scottie Scheffler is in contention to win the Hero World Challenge and he’s been speaking on just how the event feels compared to a regular PGA Tour event.

With a very much relaxed feel in the Bahamas, the Hero World Challenge is seen by some as a season opener and some as a way to simply limber up and get good preparation in for the next year.

Still, with big names like Scheffler taking part, winning the tournament is always going to be the goal.

Do you think Scottie Scheffler should play more outside of the United States?

“I haven’t really played too much golf internationally. I always come over here and try to play this tournament and The Open Championship. I haven’t played in Asia or Australia yet as a professional.

“With the way our schedule is on the [PGA Tour], the thing that’s most important to me is my time at home. It would be wonderful to be able to play an international schedule, but right now we play most of our tournaments in the States and I come over here for these few weeks.

“The off-season for us is typically where guys will go play in Asia and Australia or start the year in Dubai. For me, it’s important to get time at home because that’s my priority and playing tournaments that I can.”

Scheffler’s response when asked why he doesn’t play more internationally

“I want to play golf when I want to play golf. I want to play in the locations that I love to go to, and I want to play the majors and the Ryder Cup. That’s it.

“I think there’s an opportunity for it to be worldwide. Golf isn’t just played in America. It didn’t start in America… I think there’s an opportunity to have some of the bigger tournaments outside of America.”

As it stands, Scheffler is just one back of the leaders on nine under par. A whole host of players share the lead, meaning it’s anyone’s game right now.

Still, assessing the event at Albany, Scheffler admitted there is a slight difference between the Hero and other events.

Scottie Scheffler’s honest verdict on the Hero World Challenge

With Scheffler just a single shot back, there’ll be an expectancy among the other players and fans that he will go into another gear over the weekend.

Of course, winning the Hero is not the be-all and end-all for Scottie. However, it would take his total wins on the PGA Tour to 20 – albeit the Hero wouldn’t count towards any ‘official’ tally.

And according to Scheffler, while the event does have a different feel, he still wants to perform.

“I did some good things out there. You know, a few too many mistakes out there really but overall, another solid day on the course,” Scheffler began.

“It’s definitely a different feeling. We’ve had kind of a long break leading into it and we bring some friends to this tournament as well and have a lot of fun. It’s a good kind of relaxing – it feels like the start to the year – even though the break to our next event is a bit longer than it normally would be. But overall, it’s a fun way to start the year.”

Adding further comment on if he can actually take momentum from such an event, Scheffler admitted it’s definitely something he considers.

“No, I think you can always take good momentum from playing well. I wouldn’t look too far into it if I didn’t have a good week this week, I wouldn’t really try to carry that momentum even further, but overall I feel like it’s a good place to kind of see where my game’s at and then kind of get ready for the season. It feels like a good warmup event.”

Scottie Scheffler is looking ominous already

Like we seem to see so many times with the world number one, he’s looked nowhere near his best and yet is still within the hunt to win.

That pretty much sums up Scheffler in the last few years. He’s always there or thereabouts, even when he’s not at his best.

For the rest of the field, it’s already an ominous message for them. They know full well that unless Scheffler struggles and they bring their A-game, then the chances of seeing him off get slimmer.

Put simply, if Scheffler plays well, then he’ll win most weeks and right now, that is the conundrum every other golfer has got to get over.
