Augusta National is renowned as one of the world’s toughest golf courses and it goes without saying that there are a number of holes that can ruin a round.
The famous 12th hole over water is a prime example of that, while even the opening couple of tee shots are intimidating even to the most experienced Masters player.
As we know, one man who is well versed in getting around Augusta National is Scottie Scheffler.
The two-time winner is going for his third in four years in just a few weeks’ time and he’ll be more than aware of what needs to be done to get the job done.
And assessing Augusta on a hole by hole basis, Scheffler has spoken of how golfers tend to make the same error when it comes to the par five eighth.

Scottie Scheffler explains why other golfers get the 8th hole at Augusta National wrong
Going into detail about the about the 8th at Augusta, Scheffler explained that while it might be a par five, people make the same mistake on the hole over and over.
“A lot of it depends on wind direction on that hole. If I can cover that bunker on the right, if not I am typically hitting the same tee shot where I am just trying to get the ball in play. Just because the left there is really bad off the tee,” Scheffler explained.
“A lot of people don’t realise.
“Typically at Augusta there is a lot of room to kind of play if you hit the ball off line in the trees you can usually play some kind of shot, but over there there is a lot of low hanging tress and you may not even have a swing.
“It’s a huge penalty if you miss it left and with it being a reachable par five, if you hit it in the bunker you are going to be laying up pretty far back, especially if you get up in the lip it can be tough to cover the ridge in the fairway so it’s another hole where it’s essential to get the ball in play.
“I have hit some really nice pitch shots there. I remember the up and down I had on Sunday last year. I remember hitting some really nice pitch shots, one of them being to the back right pin, when I was left of the green. I feel like it’s a hole I have stayed in position most of the time and then been able to attack it with good pitches.”
Scheffler’s record at the 8th in his career is pretty impressive, with the world number one being nine under for his career at the ‘Jasmine’ hole.
What Tiger Woods said about the 8th hole at Augusta
While Scottie Scheffler’s opinion on all things Masters is more than valued, a player who has won even more around the property is a certain Tiger Woods.
Woods sits only second to Jack Nicklaus in Masters wins and according to the official Masters website, Woods describes the hole as ideal for getting creative.
“The distinctive mounds around the green, which were part of the original hole’s design by Bobby Jones and Dr. Alister MacKenzie, can be troublesome and often present opportunities for bold and creative shot making,” Woods is quoted as saying.
With Scheffler also discussing the difficulties of the 12th, it’s safe to say that the middle of the round at the Masters is very much a spot where the tournament can get away from you.
