Scottie Scheffler has issued his verdict on Le Golf National ahead of the Olympics, and shared what Ted Scott told him about the changes which have been made on the course.
Scottie Scheffler will be looking to secure what already appears to be one of the only accolades still missing from his resume, by winning Olympic gold in the coming days.
The world number one will undoubtedly be a big favourite to triumph in France, particularly during a year in which he has already won six times. But of course, Le Golf National has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Americans previously, with the visitors suffering a heavy defeat when they came over for the 2018 Ryder Cup.
The golf course was set up to trap those who tried to rely on distance, and it feels safe to say that the Americans fell into that trap.
Scottie Scheffler issues verdict on Le Golf National
Scottie Scheffler would only make his Ryder Cup debut three years later, so does not boast those scars from 2018. And speaking in his press conference ahead of the Olympics, Scheffler shared what he has learned about the venue, particularly from his caddie.
“I played 18 and played nine today. From what I saw from The Ryder Cup, and Teddy caddied in the Ryder Cup here; so he had a lot of good info on the course,” he said.

“The rough is not nearly as penal as it was for the Ryder Cup and right now the golf course is not nearly as firm. We’ll see how the weather is for the rest of the week but I’m sure it will firm up a bit if we get no rain.
“Teddy did mention how much the course changed from practice rounds to tournaments that week – from the practice rounds to the tournament this week. So maybe it will be a little bit similar this week in terms of the golf course changing. But I did watch the Ryder Cup and Ted has got some good info from the course that week.”
Ominous signs at The Open
It probably would not have been bad for Scheffler if the course proved to be as difficult as it had been back in 2018, as finding the fairway has definitely not been an issue for The Masters champion this year; he has been flawless from tee to green.
It was ominous that he finished inside the top 10 at The Open without ever looking that impressive, by his ridiculous standards anyway. Certainly, Scheffler struggled on the greens at Royal Troon.
So if something clicks for him just outside the French capital, it is going to be so difficult for any of his rivals to stop him winning that gold medal.
