Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler are tied for the lead heading into the weekend at the Travelers Championship.

Scheffler is the world’s best golfer by a long way, but when Thomas is on form, he’s more than good enough to hold his own against the world number one.

The 32-year-old fired a 64 on day two of the Travelers Championship on Friday, and that saw him jump into a tie for the lead alongside the 28-year-old from Dallas.

Thomas praised Scheffler ahead of the Travelers Championship, and there is obviously a mutual respect between the two players.

The two Americans have both won 16 PGA Tour titles, although the world number one has one more major win.

However, Thomas could move one PGA Tour win clear of Scheffler this week, if he manages to usurp him at the Travelers Championship over the weekend.

Good luck with that JT!

Scottie Scheffler reacts to what Justin Thomas has said about him

Both players lauded one another after their rounds at TPC River Highlands on Friday.

Thomas was asked by reporters whether there is a science behind playing good golf in the wind.

Definitely. I just think it’s control. I think it’s why Scottie is so good in the wind. He hits the middle of the club face about every time. That’s a huge part of it, distance control.

It’s hard to explain because the difference of if you have a straight left-to-right wind or straight right-to-left wind, the difference of riding the wind and holding the wind can be a 15- or 20-yard difference in the air in these kind of conditions.

It’s just total — you have to just hit the shot that’s required, and I feel like — I should say, hit the shot that you are requiring. There’s a lot of different ways to get it in one place. But you need to do what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to hold one and you ride the wind, that’s not good for a lot of reasons.

I think it’s way more art because you just have to create and kind of feel out there.

And after JT’s comments on him, Scheffler was asked if he agrees with the 16-time PGA Tour winner’s assessment regarding how best to play in the wind.

He said: Yeah, yeah. I would use “robotic” as maybe the word. It’s not as robotic. I think when you’re playing under no conditions or very light winds, I think you can hit a similar flight on every single shot and it would be fine. On days like today you have to work the ball both ways. You have to hit low shots, hit high shots. You’re always playing a different type of shot, especially in conditions like this.

The world number one then responded when asked about his opinion of Thomas as a golfer.

Scheffler said: Yeah. Justin is a guy that I looked up to from a young age. He was a really talented junior player, talented amateur player. He had a lot early success out here on TOUR.

Justin is an extremely hard worker. I think Justin is more of a practicer than I am. I’m more of like — I like to play a lot when I practice. With Justin, he is very, very disciplined in the way he approaches things, and that’s why you’ve seen him have success for so many years out here. He sticks to his process. He doesn’t let things kind of get to him, I think, and I think a lot of that goes back to how hard he prepares to come out here and play. He’s very, I would say, professional in the way he approaches things.

Scottie Scheffler vs Justin Thomas stats compared

Not many golfers can keep up with Scheffler, and Thomas’s stats are a long way off what the three-time major champion has produced this season.

StatsSchefflerThomas
Strokes gained off the tee2nd95th
Strokes gained approach1st12th
Strokes gained scrambling2nd127th
Strokes gained putting20th15th

It’s clear to see from those numbers that Thomas is nowhere near Scheffler’s level right now.

However, the great thing about golf is that Thomas is still capable of toppling Scheffler when he’s on top form.

And we will find out whether he has what it takes to go face-to-face with the world number one on Saturday at TPC River Highlands.
