Scottie Scheffler provided an emphatic reminder, if there was any doubt, that he is the best player on the planet right now with the world number one winning the PGA Championship to secure his third major title this past week.

Scottie Scheffler was most definitely one of the names to look out for heading into the PGA Championship. Like Bryson DeChambeau, he went to Quail Hollow having won on his most recent start. The 28-year-old ran away with The CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

DeChambeau did put himself in the mix, as did Jon Rahm. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy had a nightmare week in North Carolina, finishing up at three over par. But it was Scheffler who produced a masterclass to win by five.

Scheffler did allow things to get interesting, with Rahm moving level with the American at one stage on Sunday. But it really did not take too long for Scheffler to have a commanding lead once again.

The crucial moment in the tournament however, came after Scheffler made a bogey on the 13th hole on Saturday. He played the final five holes of the third round in five under par to move himself three shots clear of everyone else.

And speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Ewen Murray admitted that he was stunned by Scheffler’s three birdies and an eagle in that run.

“It was a very strange final day, because coming off air on Saturday, the last five holes that Scheffler played was probably the best golf I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot of good golf: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, all the big names over the last 35 years. But that was the most controlled golf that I’d seen over a very difficult stretch of the course,” he said.

“Then he comes out on Sunday and he’s an 8.5 handicap for the first nine holes. He gets himself five in front and within seven or eight holes, all of a sudden, he’s tied with Jon Rahm. But I think you saw just what a great competitor and golfer that Scheffler is, because it’s a very difficult thing in a round where you’re playing poorly – and that would be by his own admission – and then all of a sudden turn it around and be so calm, so measured and so precise over the last nine holes. Very strange major, but very exciting all the same.”

The outstanding statistics which made up Scottie Scheffler’s victory at Quail Hollow

Scheffler’s performance across all aspects of the game at Quail Hollow was so unbelievably impressive. It cannot be forgotten that the PGA Championship has a very fair claim to boast the strongest field in golf.

He was inside the top 10 for strokes gained off the tee, approach and around the green. He was inside the top 25 for strokes gained putting.

And yet, it did not feel as if Scheffler had his very best stuff. His display at TPC Craig Ranch was arguably even more complete.

He was tied for sixth for the lowest number of bogeys across the week at the second major of the year. So he was not flawless by any means.

That will frighten his rivals more than anything. There is potentially a lot more to come from Scheffler off the back of two wins in a row.
