After the 2024 season Scottie Scheffler, it was impossible not to ask just how close the world number one could get to the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods during his career.
Scottie Scheffler had the kind of year not seen on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods was at his peak. The 28-year-old won nine times worldwide, including at The Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship and the Olympic Games.
Scheffler still has a point to prove, as both of his major titles to date have come at Augusta National. But it was undoubtedly a remarkable season which is going to be talked about for decades to come.
It remains to be seen just where Scheffler’s ceiling will be. Of course, if his 2024 is a sign of what is to come, then he will surely put himself amongst the greatest of all-time.
The part of Scottie Scheffler’s game which is better than Jack Nicklaus
Obviously, he has a long, long way to go before Scheffler is putting pressure on the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Woods. He is 13 majors behind the latter, while he would need three more on top of that to catch the Golden Bear.
The good news is that some aspects of Scheffler’s game are being talked about in the same category as the likes of Nicklaus and Woods. Speaking on Fried Egg Golf, Jaime Diaz explained where Scheffler ranks against the two greatest players the game has seen.

“I think that’s the Tiger influence in terms of having studied or just watched by osmosis how Tiger played that Jack didn’t quite have. So that was the evolution. Tiger had just about everything, if not everything, and the short game was crucial to that, and Scottie is in that same skillset almost through the bag,” he said.
“He’s got the power – it’s not quite Jack power, not quite Tiger power – but the iron play and everything else is of the same calibre. And the chipping is where he sets himself apart from Jack and approaches Tiger.”
Where Scottie Scheffler’s short game ranked on the PGA Tour during historic 2024 season
It is potentially the part of the game where Scheffler does not get enough credit. He is widely known for being a phenomenal iron player, while he rarely puts himself in trouble with the driver. He has also made so much progress with the putter.
But he was still inside the top 20 on the PGA Tour in 2024 for strokes gained around the green.
| Strokes gained category | Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Tour rank (2024) |
| Off the tee | 2nd |
| Tee to green | 1st |
| Approach | 1st |
| Around the green | 17th |
| Putting | 77th |
| Total | 1st |
Obviously, Scheffler is yet to rediscover the same magic at the start of 2025. But he is knocking on the door without looking to be anywhere near his best.
That is ominous for those hoping to close the gap to Scheffler. You get the feeling that he is trending in the right direction at a decent rate.
And given that it is Augusta National up next for the two-time Masters champion, it should surprise absolutely no-one if he is a three-time major winner before too long.
