If you want to succeed in the modern game of golf, then you need to be able to drive the ball long and PGA Tour player Sam Burns has revealed two TOUR players have shocked him.
Burns is no longer a rookie on the PGA Tour now and at 29, has been around long enough to see some of the best of past and present hit a golf ball.
Burns himself is no cannon fodder mind, having won five PGA Tour events, which includes a World Golf Championship in 2023.
However, like many top American names like Patrick Cantlay and Collin Morikawa, Burns is struggling to add more wins to this resume.
Part of the reason for that is how strong the fields are and the emergence of new talent looking instantly at home.
Indeed, according to Burns, there are two new players on the PGA Tour who have left him stunned.

Sam Burns says two PGA Tour players shocked him with their driving ability
The modern golfer needs to be able to hit the ball far and in the era of a Rory McIlroy or Bryson DeChambeau, it’s easy to see why the youngsters copy these players.
Indeed, according to Burns, it is PGA Tour newcomers Aldrich Potgieter and Michael Thorbjornsen who have really left him stunned with their driving.
“I would say that I do feel like a long hitter but I have played recently with some young guys who have come out and I’m just like it’s absurd. I mean like 190mph ball speed and it’s effortless. I’m like I do not have that and I probably never will,” Burns said.
“I played with Michael Thorbjornsen, he was really long. Another one, was I played that Potgieter kid recently and he absolutely bombs it. I mean, he hit a couple of drives and I was like that’s too far left or too far right and we get up there and it was like, no, that’s just perfect. His grip is just so strong! He is built like a refrigerator.”

When we look at the stats with these three players, it is obvious that Burns comes up way short when it comes to the distance he gets.
However, that doesn’t tell the whole story, and Burns more than holds his own across the board.
| Sam Burns | Aldrich Potgieter | Michael Thorbjornsen | |
| Driving distance (Yards) | 307 (53rd) | 327.6 (1st) | 318.3 (3rd) |
| Driving accuracy | 82nd | 142nd | 68th |
| Distance from edge of fairway | 60th | 176th | 93rd |
| SG off the tee | 69th | 2nd | 17th |
| Total driving | 29th | 40th | 3rd |
Clearly, Burns has work to do to catch up with these two studs in distance.
But as the stats show, it’s not the be-all and end-all and Burns actually is better in some of the metrics.
