Cameron Young has finally got across the line and is now a winner on the PGA Tour after clinching the Wyndham Championship with a dominant performance in North Carolina.
There were shades of Scottie Scheffler‘s display at The CJ CUP Byron Nelson in Cameron Young‘s victory at Sedgefield this week.
On that occasion, Scheffler won by eight at TPC Craig Ranch. Just when it appeared that he could coast across the line, the world number one fired a 63 in the final round to maintain his advantage from Saturday.
Young made five birdies in his first six holes on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship to ensure the chasing pack were playing for second place.
Gary Woodland reacts as Cameron Young secures his first PGA Tour victory
The result moves Young up inside the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the playoffs. It also hands his hopes of making a Ryder Cup debut in September a massive boost, it seems.
Young went into the week 19th in the qualification standings. And with no victories on the PGA Tour previously, it appeared that he was going to struggle to prove himself to Keegan Bradley.
But it was hard not to be impressed by his display this week. And speaking after his own final round, US vice-captain Gary Woodland was full of praise for Young’s performance. He also predicted that this will be the first of many for the 28-year-old.

“Awesome, awesome. We all know he’s got a lot of talent. He’s been out here for a while, I think seven runner-up finishes or whatever it is. The start that he got off to today, I saw the leaderboard, him taking off, it’s awesome. I’m happy for him, he deserves it. I think it’s just the start,” he said.
“I mean, the way he drives the golf ball, his putting stats this year are really good as well. Cam’s got a lot of talent and anytime you can bring a lot of talent, it helps everybody. I’m happy for him. Like I said, I think it’s just the start for him,” he added, when asked about what he would bring to the team if involved.
Keegan Bradley and Cameron Young shared similar pain before the 2023 Ryder Cup
Young has been knocking on the door for some time. He finished in the top three at two of the majors in 2022, including The Open Championship where he was runner-up to Cameron Smith at St Andrews.
He finished fourth at the US Open earlier this year. And crucially, Keegan Bradley will be able to relate to Young after they went through a similar experience in 2023.
Young and Bradley were the highest ranked American players who did not feature in Rome. Young was ninth in the standings while Bradley was two places lower.
Momentum is so important at this stage of the year. So Young winning so comfortably less than two months before the Ryder Cup will clearly not go unnoticed.
