McIlroy‘s official handicap has just been revealed and it is genuinely mind-blowing.
What a year 2025 has been for the Northern Irishman. He won three times on the PGA Tour including his Masters triumph which saw him complete the career Grand Slam.
He also won the Irish Open, secured his seventh Race to Dubai crown and played a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph against the United States at Bethpage Black in September.

McIlroy is thought to have the ‘highest ceiling’ in golf, despite the fact that Scottie Scheffler may be consistently better than the 36-year-old.
On his day, the five-time major champion is extremely hard to beat, and his official handicap proves just how good he is.

McIlroy is a member of 18 golf courses worldwide, including Apogee Golf Club in Indiantown, Florida.
In fact, the five-time major champion was a founder member at the 7,138-yard, par-72 Tom Fazio design.
Apogee South Course, where McIlroy plays his golf, is an incredibly difficult track, with a slope rating of 133 off the back tees and a course rating of 74.6.
Incredibly, McIlroy plays off a truly ludicrous handicap of +8.7.
That means that eight of his last 20 rounds work out at roughly nine under the course rating on average.
That said, most of McIlroy’s cards that he has uploaded to the GHIN system have been from PGA Tour tournaments!
Ian Poulter’s handicap as an amateur even more ridiculous than McIlroy’s
While McIlroy’s handicap of +8.7 is mind-boggling, Ian Poulter‘s was equally as eyebrow-raising, but in a completely different sense.
Poulter, a former world number five, has enjoyed huge success during his time in the game.

That just goes to show how hard the Englishman worked on his game, and it is proof that if you dedicate yourself to your craft, anything is possible.
