It wasn’t quite to be for Rory McIlroy at the Scottish Open this weekend.
McIlroy played well each day but left a few shots out there in each round and ultimately fell short as Robert MacIntyre battled back to win following his heartbreak in 2023.
MacIntyre’s winning score of 18 under was enough to see off a resurgent Adam Scott, while the impressive Ludvig Aberg tumbled down the leaderboard in the end.
Of course, for McIlroy, this week was all about preparing for The Open at Royal Troon this coming week.
The Open represents the final chance in 2024 for McIlroy to win his fifth major and after taking a break after his US Open loss, he looked in good shape.
McIlroy will head over to Troon feeling good about where he is and with the hope that, finally, he lands that elusive first major since 2014.
And speaking about just where he sees his game right now, McIlroy summed things up.

Rory McIlroy explains where he is with his golf ahead of The Open
After carding under par rounds in each of the four rounds of the Scottish Open, McIlroy has reason to be cheerful.
And speaking to the press after today’s final round, McIlroy admitted that he thinks he’s in a good place ahead of this week.
“I think it’s really good,” McIlroy said when quizzed on where he sees his game right now.
“You know I haven’t played links golf since Hoylake last year so it was good to play. Got to play in a little bit of wind today. Still, not much, but more than we had.
“Just getting acclimatised to the shots you need. I don’t think the speed of the greens will be too dissimilar next week. So I think overall, I don’t think my game’s in too bad shape going into next week.”
McIlroy will know that Royal Troon offers up a completely different test and with big names like Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler playing as well, the field is stacked.
However, the 35-year-old is looking good and if ever there was a time to win that fifth major, it feels like now is the perfect time for McIlroy.
