Rory McIlroy has been offering some unique insight into his life outside of Golf and has spoken of his relationship with Tiger Woods.

Arguably golf’s two biggest stars, PGA Tour stars McIIroy and Woods hold 19 major titles between them.

The pair have, so far, remained loyal to the PGA Tour, despite the obvious temptations of LIV Golf and top names like Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka jumping ship.

Of course, McIlroy and Woods’ star power on the golf course also transcends to people being interested in their life off the course as well. And the Northern Irishman has been speaking about his relationship with Woods outside of the sport.

Rory McIlroy shares just how well he gets on with Tiger Woods now

McIlroy was the latest guest on Sky’s The Overlap – Stick to Football podcast.

And when asked by Gary Neville and co about his relationship with Tiger, McIlroy was full of compliments for the 15-time major winner.

“I feel very fortunate that Tiger was my hero growing up in golf. And we have forged a really good relationship. Sometimes people say you don’t want to meet your heroes. But he has been really good with me and my family,” McIlroy said.

“He has been great with all of us and I have forged a really good relationship with him. I feel sometimes like he sees me as a little brother in a way, and he can relate to me, and he tries to help me out. I’ve been over to his house and he’ll show me things and shots and tell me this is how I feel. I feel like I have been really lucky that I have been able to learn those things from him and the fact he is so open with me and wants to share, because I don’t think he is like that with everyone.”

Woods and McIlroy are two giants of sport

It’s very rare we see two absolute giants of the game be so close really. We see all the time stories about Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi not being the best of friends, albeit there is an obvious respect.

With Woods and McIlroy, it very much seems there is an actual friendship there that now goes beyond just golf and winning.

Tiger has been such an influential figure on golf over the years that’s it hard to ever imagine a day when he won’t be kicking around on the tour. But that time will eventually come, and it looks like McIlroy is going to pick up the baton.

McIlroy is desperate to add to his major haul and given his talent, it’s a surprise he’s not closer to Tiger in that respect.

But in terms of icons of golf and sharing a mutual respect for each other’s work, you’d struggle to find two better examples in the world of sport.
