Rory McIlroy was amazed by one thing he noticed on day one of the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans.
The Northern Irishman has teamed up with his compatriot Shane Lowry for the solitary team event on the PGA Tour.
The event consists of fourball and foursomes, with the better ball format taking centre stage on Thursday. And it was an excellent start for the Northern Irish pair, who carded an eleven-under-par 61 to tie for the lead.
It’s McIlroy’s first trip to New Orleans, and the 34-year-old has shed light on how he’s found his visit thus far.

Speaking after his round, McIlroy was quizzed on how he’s found his first outing at TPC Louisiana.
The four-time major champion was quick to highlight the support he and Lowry received whilst out on the course on Thursday.
He said: “A really good start. I’ve had a wonderful time so far, even though I’ve only been here a couple of days. I thought the crowds and support we got out there was amazing, so looking forward to more of that over the next couple of days.”

McIlroy knows better than anyone that it’s been far too long since he won a major. His last triumph came ten years ago. Nobody who was present at Valhalla in 2014 would’ve anticipated the Northern Irishman to have gone empty-handed since.

Fortunately for McIlroy, the year’s second major is once again heading to the Louisville venue; he will no doubt be looking to recreate his impeccable 2014 performance.
At the moment, any slight advantage must be grasped upon with both hands. Scottie Scheffler’s form is ominous for the world’s best, and it could take someone like McIlroy to once again return to what has previously been an elite level.
