Rory McIlroy says what he wants to do more of ahead of The Open

Rory McIlroy will be desperate to clinch success at The Open, given both his short-term and long-term history.

The Northern Irishman fell just short at the US Open last month, finishing one shot behind champion Bryson DeChambeau.

McIlroy had the title in his grasp at Pinehurst, but missed two putts within four feet in the latter stages of his final round.

The world number two made a quick exit from the course following the heartbreak, with McIlroy revealing that many ‘people within golf’ have since reached out and supported him.

He last tasted major glory at the 2014 PGA Championship, with McIlroy lifting The Open Championship trophy in the same year.

Other majors have come at the 2011 US Open and 2012 PGA Championship, with a decade now approaching since his last victory.

The 35-year-old has enjoyed a stunning career, but has now admitted that he hasn’t taken the time to appreciate his success.

“I need to take a step back and appreciate what I’ve done in my career and in my life and enjoy my success,” said McIlroy, as quoted by The Telegraph.

“I don’t really enjoy my success. I haven’t been on a vacation in probably four or five years. So I think just stepping back and enjoying myself a little bit more away from my game is the thing. Have some fun.

“It can be all-encompassing trying to figure out this game, I don’t think there’s another sport in the world where golf and life are so intertwined. I live on a golf course and it’s so easy to just go out there at 7pm and hit a few balls.

“So I think being able to just get away from it and give yourself that free headspace of not thinking about golf is a good thing. I’m committed to having more fun going forward.”

McIlroy has come so close to clinching further major silverware over the years, most recently in North Carolina last month.

But he has come up short on every occasion, with The Open representing his final chance at major success this year.

It is certainly achievable for the 26-time PGA Tour winner, with Dame Laura Davies predicting McIlroy to compete for The Open title.

The Northern Irishman is currently preparing for Royal Troon at the Scottish Open, where he is impressing.

McIlroy is in contention at The Renaissance Club, with victory there certain to fill him with much-needed confidence ahead of The Open next week.
