Rory McIlroy opted to play in the Australian Open this week ahead of the Hero World Challenge on the PGA Tour and it seems the Northern Irishman has zero regrets.

McIlroy goes into the weekend at two under par but needs to claw back seven shots to get near the leaders.

Still, the overall experience for McIlroy has been a positive one so far and he’s been very much complimentary towards Australia and the golf on offer over there.

McIlroy has been playing with Aussie legend Adam Scott at the tournament and in that time, he’s had the chance to have a good catch up with the former Masters winner.

Do you think Rory McIlroy will win two or more majors before he retires?

It’s a whole different kettle of fish nowadays. He’s done way more than me. He’s won 29 times in America.‘Of the all-time greats, I’d put him fifth. Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack [Nicklaus] and Tiger [Woods]. Rory is right there. No discredit to Gene Sarazen, but that was a completely different era. I’ve hardly seen any footage of him, but achieving the grand slam puts you in a different category.

He obviously got off to a flyer with those first four majors. I remember I said then he might be really disappointed to only win ten majors or he will be ecstatic to win five.‘Tiger [Woods] and [Ben] Crenshaw both had big gaps [also 11 years] but only won one more. Rory is 35, he’s as fit as a fiddle, and you’ve got to believe he’s really shaken the monkey off his back.

I would’ve thought it’ll set him free and he might be the unique one to go on and win [multiple] more majors.

Nick Faldo’s comments after Rory McIlroy won the Masters

Indeed, speaking to the press after his second round today, McIlroy made a telling admission about the golf fans Down Under.

Rory McIlroy’s verdict on the fans at the Australian Open

McIlroy has already been bigging up this week’s event and he’s called on more to be done to keep the game growing and improving in Australia.

Of course, McIlroy’s commitment to playing in Melbourne means he misses the Hero World Challenge on the PGA Tour side of things.

But it seems that McIlroy is more than happy with his decision and he outright lauded the fans in attendance at his event.

In quotes shared by Golf Digest Australia Evin Priest, it seems McIlroy is more than impressed.

Why the PGA Tour needs to build on McIlroy’s Australian Open appearance

The PGA Tour will always be very much concentrated on America and that is fine in a way. However, with LIV Golf and the DP World Tour ever expanding and bringing golf to different countries, it is something the PGA needs to have on their radar.

Yes, it would need a lot of planning and commitment from the best players on TOUR but we’ve seen this week in Melbourne that plenty of big names are willing to compete.

If the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth were all open to such events, then this gives the PGA Tour a real chance to expand beyond America.

McIlroy’s appearance in Australian has been a roaring success and as a learning experience and given McIlroy’s own comments through the week, it’s definitely something the PGA need to look at further.
