Rory McIlroy is the 2025 Players Championship winner after seeing off J.J. Spaun in a playoff and he had a fine tee shot on the treacherous par three 17th to thank for the win.
McIlroy blitzed Spaun off the tee and the American never recovered as he lost by a couple of shots.
For McIlroy, winning a big event like the players will be massive for his confidence and he becomes the first European to be a multiple time winner of the event at TPC Sawgrass.
Of course, for McIlroy to win, he had to tackle the 17th and make sure he didn’t find water. And while he looked as Spaun dunked his shot into the drink, McIlroy found the middle of the fairway.
And revealing a chat with his caddy, Harry Diamond, McIlroy has spoken of just how vital that shot was.

Rory McIlroy shares what he told Harry Diamond after his tee shot on 17
McIlroy was speaking to the media just after holing out to win the event on 18 and was asked about the shots he managed to play over the three holes.
Indeed, specifically addressing the shot he played on 17, McIlroy admitted he’d spoken to Diamond while walking down 18 about how important that shot was.
“I have worked really hard,” McIlroy said. “I feel like I am a way more complete player than I was a few years ago, even in conditions like this.
“That little nine iron into 17 and the eight iron into the last, I said to Harry there that that little shot will take us a long way. I feel like I can play in all conditions and anything that comes my way and I am really happy that I was able to get it done today.”
