Most golf fans around the world are desperate for Rory McIlroy to win the Masters and finally complete the career grand slam.

The Northern Irishman had won the other three by 2014 but has failed to add to them since.

The pressure going into Augusta next week is as big as ever for McIlroy. He is one of a number of big names expected to produce and he’ll be hoping to really deliver.

Currently playing in the Valero Texas Open, McIlroy is under par and playing nice enough as he fine tunes his game ahead of next week.

However, while many have watched McIlroy for some time now and wondered just why he can’t seem to get back to winning ways, few have ever thought about potential injuries.

And speaking live on the course during Sky Sports’ coverage last night, McIlroy revealed that he is still actually struggling with an injury from 2017 when it comes to his swing.

Rory McIlroy shares injury problem from 2017 that’s disrupting him

Looking at McIlroy’s near perfect swing, it’s hard to imagine he is carrying anything that is holding him back.

But the 34-year-old has shared that a rib injury from around seven years ago is still causing him an issue, especially when it comes to a full rotation in his swing.

“I had this rib injury back in 2017 and that’s sort of, it’s been hard for me to get back in that position, to sort of, externally rotate the right shoulder and right arm. So I’m always trying to work to get back to something similar to that but since that rib injury it’s just been that little bit more difficult to get back into that position because sometimes if I try and do it too much, it starts to hurt and I have to back off,” McIlory said.

Quite whether this is enough for McIlroy to not be winning tournaments, only he knows.

But like so many things in golf, it is yet another thought in the mind that golfers simply don’t need.
