Rory McIlroy shot a fine three under par second round at Quail Hollow to keep himself in contention going into the weekend.

Xander Schauffele is the clubhouse leader on 11-under but McIlroy is just four shots back alongside Jason Day, and both will feel there’s a chance to reel the American in over the weekend.

For McIlroy, it’s all about getting the reps in after what has been a frustrating few weeks and months on the PGA Tour so far.

McIlroy started the season in fine fashion, coming first and then second over Dubai on two of the DP World Tour’s signature events. But since then, his form has dipped and he endured a nightmare Masters to miss out for yet another year.

However, McIlroy has taken himself away and seen Butch Harmon and a few others to get some advice on how to get back to his best.

And after winning at The Zurich with Shane Lowry and now being in contention at The Wells Fargo, McIlroy has shared just what he’s been working on.

Rory McIlroy reveals exactly what he’s been working on in his golf swing after round two at Quail Hollow

Speaking after his round to the press in his flash interview, McIlroy revealed the details of what he’s trying to bring to his swing now after seeing Harmon.

“Erm…trying to support the club better with my right arm. Yeah and then just trying to sort of sync up the turn through, sync up the right hip, right shoulder, and getting everything together through impact because sometimes what happens is my lower body stops and my upper body keeps going.

“And that’s the one that I get going left. So really just trying to sync up the rotation on the way through. So yeah, right arm, rotation on the way are the two main thoughts,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy showing signs ahead of the PGA Championship

We all know Rory would love to go and win this week at Quail Hollow. It’s a course he enjoys and has had huge success at before, so he can do it.

But the main takeaway really is that he looks in good nick heading into the PGA.

McIlroy is desperate to get that fifth major won and while it won’t be the Masters, another notch on the board a decade after his last one will feel like a big weight off the shoulders.

The Northern Irishman looks more relaxed than he has done for some time and while Schauffele has a lead, McIlroy can soon eat into that if he gets hot.

Expect a busy weekend of movement then as the race to win the Wells Fargo continues.
