Rory McIlroy is in contention at the Scottish Open after another excellent second round performance.

McIlroy carded a well-plotted 66 to come into the clubhouse at nine-under par for the week and head into Saturday’s third round just three shy of leader Ludvig Aberg.

The Northern Irishman is very much looking in contention to defender his title from 2023 and with The Open at Royal Troon next week, this feels like good preparation.

Of course, any golfer in the world will always find room for improvement in their game and despite shooting 66, McIlroy was not completely happy.

Indeed, the 35-year-old has suggested that there’s a seriously low score in him, just as long as he can stop making mistakes.

Rory McIlroy thinks he can shoot a 62 at the Scottish Open

Speaking after his second round of 66, McIlroy has insisted that he can go even lower if he manages to put everything together.

“I’ll have to get off to a good start tomorrow just like I got off to a good start today. There’s a few opportunities in that first six holes so I think that’s pretty important and from there, see where I am,” McIlroy said.

“If I can keep playing the way I’m playing and limit the mistakes, I definitely feel like there’s a lower one in me. I saw a 62 and 63 out there today.

“If we continue to get conditions like this, I think that’s what it’s going to take to be right up there around the lead going into Sunday.”

Should McIlroy go low as he suggests here, it would put him right in the mix to topple Aberg.

The impressive young Swede has carded successive 64s but he’s going to have to be at his best to do it for three rounds in a row.

McIlroy, then, will be hoping he can use his class and experience to put the pressure on Aberg and set up a thrilling finale on Sunday.
