The average amateur or part-time weekend golfer can probably recall their best ever shot at the drop of a hat but asking one of the best in world like Rory McIlroy to do the same is always going to be trickier.
As we know, McIlroy has been responsible for some of the best shots in golf and to this day, he remains box office off the tee and in and around the greens.
McIlroy has used his shot-making skills to win four majors and countless other titles, while his performances in Ryder Cups have also been excellent.
Of course, one of McIlroy’s most memorable moments was his chip shot in Rome that drew gasps from both Team USA and Team Europe players around the green.
However, while that shot lives long in the memory, McIlroy has recalled another iron shot from 2014 as a personal highlight.

Rory McIlroy’s best ever shot revealed
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kyle Porter for Normal Sport, McIlroy was asked what his best ever shot was.
And while he referenced the stunning chip at the Ryder Cup in Rome, McIlroy admitted it was one over ten years ago that sticks out.
“The coolest shot is that pitch shot at the Ryder Cup last year,” McIlroy said.
“Yeah. So that’s the coolest shot I think I’ve probably ever played. I’d say the best shot … it’s hard not to associate your biggest wins with your best shots.
“I’d say the best swing I’ve ever made is I had a five iron into the last at Hoylake in 2014 on Saturday.
It’s probably the best swing I’ve ever made.
“I eagle the last and it gives me a six-shot lead going into the final day. So that was big.”
McIlroy among some of the greats when it comes to shot selection
Yes, over the last few years we could argue Rory McIlroy has thrown things away by making bad choices.
The US Open this year saw him hit driver into he rough on the last when in reality, an iron down the fairway and another onto the green might have sufficed.
Still, McIlroy is right up there with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson when it comes to producing unbelievable moments of creativity.
So while yes, McIlroy picks out the one at Hoylake in 2014, the Ryder Cup chip is easily the most memorable, perhaps in Ryder Cup history.
