Rory McIlroy is well known as being one of the best drivers of a golf ball ever but even the world number two knows there’s room for improvement.
McIlroy regularly carries over 320 yards off the tee and normally, he does so with great accuracy.
Still, while McIlroy won The Players two weeks back, he did so without being at his best off the tee or indeed on the putting greens.
Now, after shooting level par for his opening round at the Houston Open, McIlroy has once again addressed those driving issues.

Rory McIlroy explains why he struggled with driver at the Houston Open
Despite winning The Players, Rory McIlroy admitted at the time that he’d need to be driving the ball much better to win the big events, including the Masters.
And after getting off to a slow start at the Houston Open, McIlroy admitted there was good reason for his early struggles.
“I drove it better once I got my rain gear off,” McIlroy admitted to the press.
“Couldn’t really find the middle of the club face for the first few holes. Yeah, once it brightened up and as the conditions got a little better, I felt like I drove it pretty well.”
Rory McIlroy’s driving stats in 2025
Rory McIlroy is world number two for a reason and that’s because in the main, he keeps things together across the board.
However, despite being known for his big driving, he’s not actually performing too well in terms of accuracy off the tee with the big stick.
In fact, in terms of driving accuracy, he’s way down in 168th on the PGA Tour in 2025, albeit, his total strokes gained off the tee is better than anyone.
| Driving Statistic | Rory McIlroy in 2025 |
| Driving distance | 5th |
| Driving accuracy (%) | 168th |
| Total Driving | 74th |
| SG off the tee | 1st |
| Distance from edge of fairway | 113th |
To win at Augusta, McIlroy is going to need to seriously improve his accuracy. With so much tree trouble and pine straw, if McIlroy cannot find fairways, he won’t win.
