If you’re a player on Team Europe heading into a Ryder Cup, then the chances are you are more than happy to be paired up with Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy is very much the talisman for Europe and going into Bethpage Black in a few weeks’ time, Luke Donald will be looking to his top dog to inspire and lead.
Of course, with the depth that Europe have at their disposal, McIlroy himself is not short of partners he’d like to team up with either.
Over the years, McIlroy has enjoyed some fine partnerships with players like Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter.
However, when it comes to McIlroy’s favourite ever teammate, there’s one man who stands above the rest.

Rory McIlroy picks his favourite Ryder Cup teammate
For Rory McIlroy, the list of potential favourites is massive. He’s partnered with nine players in total over the years, with mixed results.
However, when it comes to the man he’d like by his side if he had to choose, McIlroy is sure of who he’d pick.
In a special PGA Tour interview where players ask each other the questions, Tommy Fleetwood asked McIlroy who his favourite Ryder Cup partner was.
And unsurprisingly, McIlroy picked his good friend.
“Well, seeing as Tommy and I are unbeaten in the Ryder Cup I am going to go with Tommy Fleetwood,” McIlroy quipped.

Finding a solid partnership and then turning that into being a winning partnership is what great Ryder Cup duos are built on.
McIlroy and Fleetwood haven’t quite paired up as much as the Northern Irishman has with others, but when they have done, it’s been a success.
Indeed, McIlroy and Fleetwood have played together just the two times, both in Rome in 2023.
On those two occasions, they came out on top 2&1 against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in the opening session foursomes before repeating the trick on the second day to see off the tough duo of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
If they can build on that Luke Donald sends them out together at Bethpage, then Team Europe might well come back with the trophy once more.
