Rory McIlroy is firmly in contention after two rounds of the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.
McIlroy anticipated a tough test this week, and the Northern Irishman’s length off the tee appears to have benefitted him in the wet San Diego conditions.
The four-time major winner is five under after shooting 67 on Friday. Davis Thompson leads the way on eight under, and world number one Scottie Scheffler is second on seven under.
The Genesis, hosted by Tiger Woods, has one of the biggest prize pots of the season, with 20% heading to the winner. And fresh off his win at Pebble Beach, McIlroy has given himself an excellent chance to land win number two of the season.
Rory McIlroy’s favourite club of all time

Towards the end of his post-round press conference, McIlroy was thrown a curveball by a reporter who asked him to name his favourite club of all time.
“Favourite club of all time? Wow,” McIlroy replied. “Probably the M2 driver.”
He added: “Just like I still, I stare at it in my garage sometimes, wish I could still use you sometimes. It’s probably illegal at this point.”
When was the Taylormade M2 driver released?
The Taylormade M2 driver was released on February 19 2016, and was hugely popular among the world’s best players.
McIlroy and Woods both switched to the M2 upon its release, and Sergio Garcia won the Masters Tournament in 2017 while using the club off the tee.
Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka used the M2 during his maiden US Open win back in 2017 at Erin Hills. Taylormade followed up the M2 with M3/M4 drivers in 2018 and two more new versions in 2019.
Now, McIlroy uses the QI35, which was only released in January. Beforehand, the Northern Irishman had the hugely popular QI10 in his bag.
