Rory McIlroy charged back into contention at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and made history in doing so at the 10th hole.

McIlroy produced a masterful back nine to finish his round four under and go into Sunday at minus five, just four shy of leaders Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry.

The Northern Irishman really kicked into gear at the turn at Bay Hill and it was marked specifically by a stunning effort on the 10th hole. Indeed, it was a move from McIlroy that put him into the record books.

Driving the ball to the right and cutting the corner over the 401 yard 10th hole at Bay Hill, McIlroy remarkably found the putting surface with his drive. And in doing so he, became the first player in the shot-link era (since 2003) to drive the hole from the tee box.

In carding such a fine back nine, McIlroy also became the first player to shoot a 30 on the back nine since 2016.

Rory McIlroy makes history by driving the green on the 10th at Bay Hill

Speaking about the drive and his work off the tee in general, McIlroy seemed delighted with his efforts.

“I’m definitely a good few yards longer over the last couple of years than I have been in the past. I thought if I got it in one of the two front traps that would be a good leave to hit something up the green, but, yeah, I wasn’t trying to hit it on the green, but it was nice to walk up and see it on there,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy will be hoping for a big Sunday as he chases down Ryder Cup teammate Lowry and current world number one, Scheffler.

Interestingly, Scheffler has putted well this weekend and it comes after McIlroy himself suggested Scheffler use a mallet putter instead.

McIlroy, then, might end up ruing that call and advice come Sunday evening.
