After an incredible start to the 2025 season, Rory McIlroy has endured somewhat of a difficult last few weeks or so.
McIlroy burst out of the blocks this season with three wins by April at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, THE PLAYERS Championship and The Masters.
Just six weeks ago it seemed like a mere formality that the Northern Irishman would go on to be named as the Player of the Year for 2025.
However, the narrative has shifted significantly since his fantastic victory at Augusta National.
McIlroy’s driver was deemed to be non-conforming before the PGA Championship back in May at Quail Hollow.
He wasn’t the only one – Scottie Scheffler was another player whose driver was adjudged to have not met the standards required by the PGA Tour.
However, McIlroy’s name was the only one released to the press.
Unsurprisingly, McIlroy explained he felt hard done by in that regard, as he embarked on a media blackout for three weeks, right up until he broke his silence in Canada on Wednesday.
Things went from bad to worse for McIlroy at the Canadian Open on Friday, when he carded a second round 78 to finish in a tie for 142nd.
However, one top teaching professional has suggested that all of this negativity surrounding the Masters champion right now has been caused by the PGA Tour’s lack of transparency.

Peter Kostis is a famous golf coach who has worked with the likes of Paul Casey and Bernhard Langer throughout his career.
He also works as an analyst for TV companies, and has a very strong knowledge of the game.
Kostis believes that McIlroy was let down badly by the PGA Tour when it came to the fall-out of his driver being deemed non-conforming last month.
The 78-year-old called for change from the PGA Tour, as he lent his backing to McIlroy.
Kostis took to his official X account to share a detailed message about exactly why the man from Northern Ireland has the right to be angry with the tour.
That is absolutely spot on from Kostis.
The well-renowned instructor hit the nail on the head with his suggestion that more transparency is needed regarding the results of driver testing going forward.
What McIlroy said about his driver after second round 78 at the Canadian Open
McIlroy now finds himself in a really sticky situation regarding his driver.
He tested out a new model in Canada this week, but it let him down badly.
The 35-year-old hit only 13 out of 28 fairways and he lost 2.186 strokes to the field off the tee.
McIlroy spoke to reporters after his round and admitted that he will be testing out some new equipment during the course of the next few days.
“I went — so I went back to a 44-inch driver this week to try to get something that was a little more in control and could try to get something a bit more in play“, McIlroy explained.
“But if I’m going to miss fairways, I’d rather have the ball speed and miss the fairway than not.
“I was saying to Harry going down the last this is the second time this year I’ve tried the new version, and it hasn’t quite worked out for me. So I’d say I’ll be testing quite a few drivers over the weekend.“
McIlroy will undoubtedly have a new driver in his bag by the time the US Open starts next week, as he clearly still suffers from the fall-out of his ‘gamer’ being taken out of his hands three weeks ago.
