Rory McIlroy admits what he been ‘taken back’ by at the Olympics after day three finishes

Rory McIlroy is right in contention for a medal at the Olympics after an excellent third round in Paris.

McIlroy shot a brilliant round of five under par to propel himself into the mix and ensure he’s just four shots back of the leader, Jon Rahm, ahead of tomorrow’s final round.

For McIlroy, it was all about doing something to get in contention and he has done just that.

The Olympics has proven to be a big success in Paris and players have responded differently to the whole experience.

Tommy Fleetwood has admitted he’s not been entirely happy with his swing despite sitting in a medal spot, while Xander Schauffele had a bizarre experience with some ants in his second round!

Of course, for Rory McIlroy, winning a medal would be big for him after a tough year.

And McIlroy has been giving his verdict on just how he’s found things over in Paris.

Speaking about his overall experience during the Olympics, McIlroy was pressed on a comment from Jason Day where the Aussie admitted he’d been surprised by the whole experience.

And agreeing to an extent, McIlroy admitted the amount of fans out on the Le Golf National course has been his big takeaway.

“I haven’t really — I think the one thing that we’ve been taken aback by is just how many people are out there. I think that was the thing that I’ve been surprised by. Actually my first one was Tokyo,” McIlroy said.

“Especially the contrast of having no one here on the practise days, and then getting here and having 20,000 people, it’s really cool. I think that’s been the big talking point, just how great the support has been for us out here.

“But yeah, I mean, I think I was in a certain mindset going into Tokyo and I left with a different mindset, just like I’ve done a lot of times in my career because I’m ignorant and naïve and don’t give things much thought.

“But once you experience things, you start to see what the hype is about.”

The top ten is stacked with the best players from around the world heading into round four.

Jon Rahm leads the way but Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood are not far behind, while Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama are lurking as well.
