Robert MacIntyre has shared what his dad told him just before he hit his approach on the final hole at the RBC Canadian Open, with the Scot winning by one in Ontario.

Robert MacIntyre is now a winner on the PGA Tour, with the 27-year-old holding off Ben Griffin to win the Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

MacIntyre was in a commanding position heading into the final round as he boasted a four shot lead, but a bogey on the first hole, coupled with a bit of a charge from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tom Kim, opened the door for a dramatic finish.

Just when MacIntyre appeared to have the tournament in his grasp, he was unable to close that door. And heading down the last, he was just one shot clear of Griffin.

Of course, the win was particularly special for MacIntyre as he had his father on the bag for the week, and it was hardly surprising that he was so emotional after holing the winning putt.

Speaking on Sky Sports (broadcast on 2/6 from 19:00), MacIntyre shared the advice his caddie had for him on the final fairway with the job almost done.

“I was going down the last there and he was trying to tell me to stay focused and swing smooth because yesterday I got a little bit too fast. But in my head I wasn’t listening to him,” he said.

“I was thinking I want to win this for my Dad. This is a guy who has taught me the game of golf and I can’t believe I have done this with him on the bag.”

A game-changing result in Scot’s career

That win could be so important for MacIntyre’s career. He does appear to be someone who can struggle with nerves at times, judging by his opening display at last year’s Ryder Cup. There were also a couple of shots on Sunday he would surely love to have had back.

Had he fumbled getting across the line, it could have shattered his confidence and had a detrimental affect on his game whenever he got into good positions in the future.

But now, MacIntyre knows that he not only belongs on the PGA Tour, but he also has the game to win big events against some of the world’s best.
