Robert MacIntyre should be able to take plenty of positives from his first start of the year after finishing tied for fourth at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

It was Robert MacIntyre who posted the lowest round of the day on Sunday at Waialae. The Scot shot a seven under par 63 to move up 16 places in the standings.

Robert MacIntyre reveals what cost him the Sony Open in Hawaii

It was a big improvement from MacIntyre. He had finished tied for 53rd at the Sony Open in Hawaii 12 months ago. And he is well on his way to eclipsing his tally of two top five finishes on the PGA Tour in 2025.

But the 29-year-old believes that it could have easily been a lot better at the season opener.

MacIntyre dented his chances of winning over the first two days. And speaking after his final round, he admitted that his inability to keep a lid on his frustrations came back to haunt him.

“Yeah, no, it was a great round of golf to be honest. After about 12 holes I felt I should have been nine under par,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing to say, but snapped my putter on 17 on Friday afternoon. Missed a three-footer on 18 Friday afternoon, so doing that cost me a shot.

“And then obviously the backup, exact similar backup, and, yeah, big, big reminder for me that attitude has got to be right for 72 holes not just 36.

“Because at the end of the day my attitude cost me this golf tournament, and can’t be allowing that. You got to be in the right position at the right time to allow a round like today to finish off.

“So a bit disappointed overall, but a great round of golf.”

MacIntyre may be one to watch in the majors in 2026

MacIntyre has developed into one of the best golfers on the planet in recent years. It is remarkable to think back to his first match at the 2023 Ryder Cup where it really appeared that the nerves got to him.

He has now finished second at arguably the hardest US Open venue on the rota. Meanwhile, he was involved in a duel with Scottie Scheffler at the BMW Championship.

It should come as no surprise if he manages to take that final step and become a major champion in the near future.

The game is certainly there. But perhaps his comments from Hawaii show that he has got just a little more work to do before winning one of the four biggest prizes in the game.
