Thomas Detry’s shot on the 16th hole at the WM Phoenix Open and subsequent win have delighted many, with Robert MacIntyre among those to share their thoughts on both those matters.

Detry kept his cool under immense pressure to win the WM Open and become the first Belgian to win on the PGA Tour.

Detry’s final stretch of four birdies in a row – including a stunning effort on 16 – ensured he kept the likes of Daniel Berger and Jordan Spieth at arms length.

Of course, one of Detry’s good friends out on the PGA Tour is Scottish star and two-time PGA Tour winner, Robert MacIntyre.

And after being spotted waiting for Detry on 18, MacIntyre had some kind words for his fellow European.

MacIntyre was catching up with the media after his own round and was clearly looking forward to welcoming Detry to the winner’s circle.

Speaking specifically on Detry – who he played with at the Zurich and will do so again in 2025 – the Scot admitted he was delighted to see his good friend finally get his win.

“European guys out here, there are not many of us, and when you are on Tour and from Europe, it is a right good camaraderie and team spirit. We have Matt (Wallace) here as well, caddies and family. Thomas has been close a few times now and it’s just incredible to see him get over the line.”

Detry will climb up the rankings now in terms of Ryder Cup qualification and after nine second place finishes in his career, can finally call himself a winner.

As we know, one of the highlights of the whole PGA Tour is the Stadium Hole at TPC Scottsdale and after Thomas Detry had stuffed one to within a yard for birdie, good friend MacIntyre offered up his thoughts on the famous hole.

“I tried my best,” MacIntyre said. “You can either get overwhelmed by it or try your best to embrace it and I tried to embrace it. It was carnage all week, to be honest,” MacIntyre said.

With a hole in one made over the weekend the hole once again lived up to expectations and to be fair to Detry, his shot was one of the shots of the weekend given the circumstances.
