Rickie Fowler’s decade plus on the PGA Tour has seen him play all the best course on offer and he’s admitted there’s only really one course that stands up to TPC Sawgrass in terms of difficulty.

Fowler played his way into the final two rounds of The Players and is sat at five under par, six off the leaders.

Of course, everyone in golf knows the history of the famous TPC Sawgrass course and with the iconic 17th conjuring up some huge scores over the years, anything can happen.

The best players in the world can fall foul at Sawgrass but according to Fowler, there is at least one other course that gives him similar jitters.

The golf course Rickie Fowler says is just as hard as TPC Sawgrass

Fowler joined Smylie Kaufman on the side of the course to spend time overlooking the action and in doing so, he got onto the subject of how tough TPC Sawgrass can actually be.

Indeed, when asked about any courses that make him quite as nervous, Fowler admitted that there’s only really the PGA National that is up there.

“Two weeks at the Cognizant, The PGA National, that would be up there,” Fowler admitted.

“But I was thinking about it earlier when we were out there and kind of on the front nine, which side would you rather finish? Seven, eight, nine, or 16, 17, 18? Cos like this side you’ve got birdie opportunities.

“Like seven’s not easy, eight’s a hard par three but then you have par five ninth. I think this [7,8,9] is the easier finish to score on.”

The hardest golf courses on the PGA Tour

The players will all have an idea of what’s the most difficult golf course in the world and a lot of the time it comes down to their own subjective view and how they play the game of golf.

However, when it comes to statistics, there are others that are a tougher test than TPC Sawgrass.

The likes of Pinehurst No2, Augusta National and Royal Troon are all up there in difficulty, while last week’s host of the Arnold Palmer, Bay Hill, is also on the list.

With TPC Sawgrass and PGA National both not making it into the list from 2024, it’s interesting to note the courses that did, especially given the history of each one.
