The Genesis Scottish Open is the next big event across the DP and PGA Tours this week as a number of top players bid to win out.

Rory McIlroy is the standout big name taking part at the Renaissance Club and he comes into the tournament as the holder, having seen off Robert MacIntyre in fine fashion last year.

Of course, McIlroy is not the only star attraction in Scotland this week.

Rickie Fowler is one of the headliners from the PGA Tour making the trip alongside the likes of Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and South Korean star, Tom Kim.

For Fowler, who remains one of the most popular players on the whole tour, he’d be many a fan’s choice to win if the likes of McIlroy and MacIntyre can’t get it done.

And coming into the event, Fowler has revealed he’s taking a bit of a different approach to his bag by carrying two 4-irons with him.

Of course, playing the courses in Scotland often requires a golfer to have the option to keep the ball low under the wind and allow for creative shows.

Fowler, though, has opted to go with two of what are essentially the same club.

And explaining why, the American has revealed there is a slight difference in the two.

“My normal four iron is 23 degrees,” Fowler stated.

“I don’t normally carry a three-iron, so I carry a 5-wood. This though (shows club) is a club from the game improvement line and it has a stock loft of around 19 degrees.

“So, it says four, but actually plays as a two iron. It just gives me better option, lower and stronger flight.”

Quite whether it will make a difference for Fowler, remains to be seen.

The 35-year-old remains woefully short of his best form and has only finished inside the top 20 once throughout the whole of the 2024 season.

For a player of his quality, that is just not good enough and Fowler will hope a change of scenery – and seemingly strategy – helps him here.
