Rory McIlroy once again fell short in his quest for success after losing to Billy Horschel in a play-off at the BMW PGA Championship.
Horschel is the first American to win the BMW PGA Championship twice, having defeated McIlroy after two play-off holes.
South African Thriston Lawrence was also involved in the thrilling finale at Wentworth, but he dropped out after a bogey in the first play-off hole.
Both Horschel and McIlroy birdied their first attempts on the 18th, with the former then holing out for eagle as the latter repeated his birdie effort.
Paul McGinley criticised McIlroy’s iron play at the BMW PGA Championship, but the Northern Irishman seemingly didn’t do much wrong during his four rounds at Wentworth.

Horschel instead was unstoppable, with the American particularly shining in round three as he fired in seven consecutive birdies.
Rick Shiels has now shared his thoughts on McIlroy’s latest near miss, saying on the latest episode of The Rick Shiels Golf Show: “I think the other thing as well now is that when you look at dominant players over the years – Tiger [Woods] and Scottie Scheffler are probably the two best examples over the last two years.

“Because they are so dominant and they put the pressure on when they need to, other players end up crumbling away and feeling the heat of being on a leaderboard or being in the final group with Tiger or Scottie Scheffler.
“I suppose the more time Rory doesn’t finish the job off players are becoming less scared. Going into a final round with Rory thinking they can beat him.”
Is Rory McIlroy simply out of luck after another near miss?
McIlroy is definitely playing very good golf at this moment in time, with the world number three just not being able to get over the line.
A runner-up finish also went his way at the Irish Open last week, although the four-time major winner perhaps should have clinched the title.
A disappointing final round allowed Rasmus Hojgaard to edge ahead at Royal County Down, much like Bryson DeChambeau did at the US Open.

But Shiels believes McIlroy is simply out of luck, saying: “It doesn’t seem to be going his way. He could easily have won the last two tournaments, the Irish Open and this, but one player has just pipped him.
“Rasmus Hojgaard at the Irish Open had an unbelievable round to pip him, when Rory didn’t play that badly.
“And this round Rory still shot a good score, what more can you do? He birdie, birdies the two play off holes and then Billy goes birdie, eagle.”
