Tiger Woods will continue his absence on the PGA Tour for some time, allowing Scottie Scheffler to close the gap on the legendary figure.
Woods has won 15 major championships, with Scheffler currently on two, although he did manage seven PGA Tour titles last season.
Scheffler was impressed by Rory McIlroy early at the Players Championship, which the latter won via a playoff.
Ryan Lavner said Scheffler was in a ‘negative frame of mind’ after his first round at TPC Sawgrass, with the world number one going on to finish T20.
He remains without a PGA Tour win in 2025, but did have the start of his season interrupted by hand surgery.

Rick Shiels says another Tiger Woods-like golfer is off the cards
Woods meanwhile has just undergone achilles tendon surgery, and will miss many upcoming chances to fight for silverware on the course.
But he does already boast 82 PGA Tour wins, with Rick Shiels not expecting any player to match his stunning career anytime soon.
Asked on The Rick Shiels Golf Show if there will be another Woods-like golfer in our lifetime, he replied: “No.”

And asked if not even Scheffler can, he said: “No. He just can’t. Let’s be honest, he has been on a Tiger-esque run.
“But I am still not… and no disrespect to some of the guys I have played with this year, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Joaquin Niemann.
“They are absolute modern-day superstars in our sport but they are not superheroes. Whereas Tiger feels like he is a superhero.”
Scottie Scheffler has a long way to go to emulate Tiger Woods
Woods simply is special in so many ways, and undoubtedly on another level to the current group of players.
His aura itself is enough to stun or frighten opponents, but he is sadly simply not been able to be on the course enough lately.

Woods has been disrupted by injury after injury, and it remains to be seen exactly how long it will take the 49-year-old to recover from this latest issue.
But his heroics in golf will never be questioned, with the likes of Scheffler and Rahm certainly having a long, long way to go if they ever want to come close to following in his footsteps.
| Turned pro | Major titles | PGA Tour wins | Highest ranking | |
| Tiger Woods | 1996 | 15 | 82 | 1 |
| Scottie Scheffler | 2018 | 2 | 13 | 1 |
The current world number one does, however, have another chance at another remarkable season, with a first win likely to arrive very shortly.
He is, of course, a two-time Masters champion, and is likely to compete at Augusta National once again next month.
