The US Open has finally arrived, with Oakmont playing host to the third major championship of the year.

The 2025 US Open gets underway this Thursday, with Oakmont as its venue for the first time since the 2016 season.

Dustin Johnson won his first of two major championships back then, edging out Jim Furyk, Scott Piercy and Shane Lowry by three shots.

His fellow LIV Golf player Bryson DeChambeau heads into the tournament as the defending champion, having triumphed at Pinehurst last year.

He dramatically beat Rory McIlroy by one shot this time last year, having also won the US Open back in 2020.

Rick Shiels picks his US Open winner at Oakmont

Tiger Woods’ former coach Hank Haney thinks Keegan Bradley is a US Open dark horse this year, with Rick Shiels now sharing his verdict on a potential winner.

He commented on The Rick Shiels Golf Show: “For me it feels like the least excited major week this year so far.

“The Masters has huge build-up. I felt like the PGA then had incredible momentum, everyone was dead excited. It fell a tiny bit flat.

“I think it’s when you look at the top five, six or seven players in the world and they are all playing fantastically and you are going into a major.

“You’re almost like you can’t imagine one of those guys aren’t going to win. I feel like this week we haven’t really had that.

“There is a sprinkling of incredible playing going on but right now I almost can’t look past Scottie Scheffler, that’s what it feels like.

“Bryson has been playing well. Jon Rahm has been playing very well. Even Phil Mickelson in potentially his last ever US Open played great this last week.

“But then Rory missed the cut by quite a lot. That non-conforming driver issue seems to have knocked him back a little bit, doesn’t it?”

It is true that Scheffler is in truly formidable form heading into the US Open, with another major championship win for the American very much on the cards.

He clinched his third major success at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow last month, having previously won The Masters twice.

A US Open victory this week would move him one step closer to the career grand slam, with Scheffler also yet to win The Open Championship.

But Royal Portrush will not be on his mind right now, with success at Oakmont the only thing the world number one will be thinking about.

He heads into the tournament in perfect shape, having just clinched his third PGA Tour win of the season at the Memorial Tournament.

But his counterparts from LIV Golf will be desperate to knock him off his perch, with DeChambeau perhaps the leading candidate to trump Scheffler at Oakmont.

He occupies second place in the LIV Golf individual standings, with Rahm sitting in third after their latest event.

LIV Golf Virginia was, however, won by leader Joaquin Niemann, who will continue his search for a maiden major win this week.

He could be a contender in the latter stages of the US Open, with his latest victory representing his fourth of the 2025 season.

Moreover, having previously struggled to live up to expectations at major level, Niemann posted a T8 finish at the PGA Championship, his best ever result.
