Collin Morikawa looks set to continue his search for another major win elsewhere after a difficult start at The Open.

Morikawa posted a four-over 75 in round one at The Open, a tournament he won at Royal St George’s back in 2021.

He also won the PGA Championship in 2020, with his major successes representing two of his six titles on the PGA Tour.

The American is now fully focused on The Open, but has an uphill task at even making the cut at Royal Portrush.

Morikawa hired Billy Foster as his caddie shortly before the tournament, with the pair having worked together for the first time at the Scottish Open last week.

Rich Beem identifies big problem Collin Morikawa needs to fix

He missed the cut at the event at The Renaissance Club, and will be desperate to avoid the same outcome this week, but that looks very unlikely right now.

Morikawa seems very short of confidence at this moment in time, with Rich Beem offering his suggestion as to why his compatriot has been struggling for form.

Asked on Sky Sports Golf what he thinks is the problem with the two-time major winner, Beem said: “I think he’s trying to achieve perfection.

“I know he’s always been a great ball striker, but it seems he’s working on it, trying to get that even more dialled in and just isn’t letting himself go out there and play free from what I can tell.

“Really kind of grinding on some stuff when I would think that a lot of things are still pretty darn good. Overthinking.”

How has Collin Morikawa performed on the PGA Tour in 2025?

Several high-profile players are enduring frustrating winning droughts on the PGA Tour, with Morikawa perhaps top of the pile.

He last tasted success at the 2023 Zozo Championship, although has twice come agonisingly close to breaking that trend this season.

The American has finished as runner-up on two occasions, but at the same time there may just have been a few too many poor finishes for his liking.

That said, he remains in sixth place in the Official World Golf Ranking, and seventh in the US Ryder Cup qualification standings, and has impressed in various areas of his game.

But he does likely have plenty of work to do between now and September to really impress American captain Keegan Bradley.

Caddie changes certainly haven’t helped his cause, with Morikawa now onto his third such partner of the 2025 season.

Currently working with experienced caddie Foster, he briefly had Joe Greiner on his bag after ending his long-standing partnership with JJ Jakovac.

But the latest attempt isn’t exactly working out, with Morikawa likely missing The Open cut after suffering that fate in Scotland last week, although it is still very early stages for the duo.
