Those expecting Scottie Scheffler to respond to his underwhelming first round at the US Open would have been left slightly disappointed to see the world number one fail to break par once again on Friday at Oakmont.

No aspect of Scottie Scheffler‘s game was elite on Thursday at the US Open. He had to fight his way to post a 73 which left him seven shots back of the lead. It seemed inevitable however, that there would be a fightback on Friday from the 28-year-old.

Unfortunately, Scheffler was erratic once again. He made three birdies and four bogeys on his way to signing for a one over par round of 71 at Oakmont.

Scheffler finds himself at four over par at the halfway stage in Pennsylvania. And as the morning wave finished, he was seven shots back of his good friend Sam Burns, who was the clubhouse leader on three under par.

There was some doubt over whether Scheffler would even make the cut. So he certainly has a mountain to climb if he is going to contend for his fourth title in five events.

Nevertheless, speaking on Sky Sports, Rich Beem insisted that Scheffler still has an outside chance of winning the US Open for the first time this weekend.

“I think so. I think even the best players in the world are going to struggle at a US Open. Not everybody is going to come out and dominate like Tiger back in 2000,” he said.

“So, yes, I think Scottie has some things to clean up. His ball striking today was not there. He struggled with the driver and with his irons. I think there is something to look at right there.

“This course is intimidating for a lot of players, could be intimidating for a world number one. But he understands the nuances of how to play hard golf courses really well.

“It would not surprise me to see him come out tomorrow and shoot two under par.”

Scottie Scheffler’s average scores by round in 2025

Scheffler is going to need a fast start on Saturday if he is going to bring himself back into contention. Unfortunately, his performances this season provide the slightest hint that it is going to be a tough task for the three-time major winner.

Statistically, the third round has been Scheffler’s worst this year. Before this week, he averaged a score of 69 on Saturday, while Sunday was only slightly better at 68.58.

RoundScottie Scheffler’s average score (2025)
One67.75
Two68.3
Three69
Four68.58

He has often got off to a fast start and held onto his position. So it is less familiar territory for Scheffler to reach the halfway mark with so much ground to make up.

The good news is that Oakmont is about as brutal a challenge as it gets. If he can post a good score on Saturday, it may bring him right back into the mix.
