Tommy Fleetwood struggled on the greens once again during day one of the Truist Championship on Thursday.
Fleetwood has always been known as a supreme ball-striker, but his putting continues to let him down when it really matters.
The 34-year-old Englishman just doesn’t seem to hit his putts with any kind of impetus, and often misses on the short side of the hole.
Fleetwood recently suggested that he works harder on his putting than anyone else on the PGA Tour.
The seven-time DP World Tour winner is a hugely affable character, and the majority of golf fans are desperate for him to get a win under his belt in America.

Fleetwood has previously praised the unbelievable quality on the PGA Tour, and that makes it even harder to win in this day and age.
And if he doesn’t improve his putting, the simple fact of the matter is that he will find it very hard indeed to ever win in America.
Rich Beem has noticed a problem with Tommy Fleetwood’s putting
Fleetwood shot an opening round of two-under-par 68 on Thursday, and he had 32 putts.
It must be said that he actually improved massively on the greens on his back nine, but he still left plenty of shots out there.
Beem was the on-course commentator for Sky Sports’ telecast of the Truist Championship on Thursday.
And the 2003 PGA Champion responded when asked by one of his co-commentators to give his opinion on Fleetwood’s putting.

He said, “You know, I like the way that he strokes it with that claw. Everything looks pretty good, he uses a fairly light putter Tommy does. So, I think the stroke looks good, I just think sometimes, he’s always working at it, rather than just letting it kind of happen, and free-wheeling it a little bit.”
Tommy Fleetwood’s 2025 putting stats on the PGA Tour
Whilst Fleetwood is a solid putter, he isn’t in the elite bracket with the flat-stick in his hand.
Here’s how his numbers look on the PGA Tour in 2025.
| PGA Tour putting stats 2025 | Tommy Fleetwood |
| Strokes gained putting | 67th |
| Putts per round | 43rd |
| One putt % | 53rd |
| Total putting | 147th |
It’s clear to see that Fleetwood needs to improve upon his putting and perhaps Beem is correct in the sense that he needs to ‘free-wheel’ it a bit more.
Maybe the Englishman should go back to putting like he used to when he was a youngster – more freedom and less mechanical thoughts.
