It is probably always the case leading into a Ryder Cup, but it really does feel that the 2025 event at Bethpage Black is going to be like no other.
There is legitimate reason to criticise the Ryder Cup. There has been just one staging of the event since 1997 which has ended in the away team winning the trophy – and that required one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history.
But it is definitely the greatest event in golf, particularly for fans. And Bethpage in 2025 has the potential to be its finest instalment yet. Europe are looking to retain the trophy with a captain at the helm who did a fantastic job in Rome last year.
USA meanwhile, have gone rogue and appointed Keegan Bradley as captain. Bradley looks to have a genuine chance of making the team as a player having won on the PGA Tour in 2024. He also won the point which clinched the Presidents Cup for America last month.
Some concerns ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup
And of course, the stage could hardly be better. Bradley has lauded the ‘special’ Bethpage Black, and one of the factors which will elevate the event is the New York crowds. It is set to be one of the most incredible atmospheres golf has seen.
But with that come concerns. The 1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline was somewhat overshadowed by some of the behaviour of some of the fans. And it would be naive to think Bethpage is not going to be hostile, particularly towards the European team.
Certainly, Rex Hoggard has told the Golf Channel Podcast that he is expecting there to be moments where the line is very much crossed by some of those behind the ropes.

“If there is not behaviour that is considered over the top within golf circles, I’m going to be shocked, because we all know what this crowd is going to be, we all know who they are. I’ve covered major championships at Bethpage before, I’ve heard things said there before that you don’t hear anywhere else,” he said.
“And then you factor in that hometown team concept; the idea that this is tribal to the New York area fans, this is their golf course, it’s the people’s golf course, and this is your team, Team USA. I’m going to be shocked if there aren’t things said that are over the top, aren’t offensive to both players, caddies, families, anyone else involved with it on both teams. You’re right, I don’t want it to impact the outcome, I just don’t think you can police it.”
Bethpage has an opportunity to set a completely new standard
It would be a real shame if the 2025 Ryder Cup was marred by ugly scenes involving the fans. Golf fans, as well as the player themselves, should be desperate to see these events played at the courses which can deliver the most passionate crowds.
The Ryder Cup is always going to elicit incredible atmospheres wherever it goes because of the nature of the competition. But there are courses where it definitely has the potential to reach another level and set a completely new standard for the best event in the sport.
Bethpage is unquestionably one of those.
