Golf Channel writer Rex Hoggard suggested that he noticed something different about Scottie Scheffler during his win at the Travelers Championship, with the American securing his sixth title of 2024 already.

Scottie Scheffler oddly had a bit of a point to prove after an outrageous start in the season, in which he had won five times leading into the US Open.

Unfortunately, Pinehurst No. 2 got the better of Scheffler, with the world number one barely making the cut and ending up being nowhere near being in contention.

Much of the talk leading into the weekend’s events focused on Bryson DeChambeau and his outstanding performances in the majors in 2024, but Scheffler reminded everyone of his quality at the Travelers Championship.

Scheffler needed a play-off to beat Tom Kim in Connecticut, but he has now won six times this year – putting himself alongside Tiger Woods. And it is not even July.

Scheffler almost appears to have become a machine this season, but perhaps there was something unique about his performance at TPC River Highlands, with Hoggard telling the Golf Channel Podcast that he spotted something different about the 27-year-old at the weekend.

“This one seemed like this was a little bit more difficult, and maybe this is just looking from 30,000 feet, I do find it amazing that when we talk about Scottie Scheffler, we talk about the guy that doesn’t show a lot of emotion, that seems to be a bit of a robot when he’s on the golf course. I kind of saw something different this afternoon; when he finally putts out, it was almost exhaustion, relief,” he said.

“You could tell this one seemed like it took a toll for some reason, more so than maybe some of the other ones did. I’m not quite sure why, maybe it’s just the play-off and the uncertainty of it all, and the situation that he’s in after Pinehurst, we talked a lot about that, but there was emotion there and it immediately swung.

“I did like the fact that as soon as his wife and baby Bennett started coming down the hill, he just lit up. I love the idea that we get to see at least a sliver of emotion when it comes to this. But the performance, I just went on to look at his stats for the week, and it’s everything you would expect, he’s top five in everything.”

World number one must be wondering what is happening to him this season

It would be no surprise if Scheffler was struggling to take all of this in. It is less than three years ago that he was picked for the Ryder Cup team having not won once on the PGA Tour.

He is breaking records almost every time he tees it up at the moment, it seems, but he has also had to deal with some dramatic events off the course, including becoming a father.

It has probably not sunk in fully for Scheffler just what he has accomplished this year, but perhaps it started to happen as he bounced back from his US Open disappointment with victory on Sunday.

And it would take a very brave person to believe Scheffler will now stop at six wins this season.
