Rex Hoggard has made a prediction concerning how he believes Rory McIlroy will do at the Olympics as the Northern Irishman looks to bounce back from his disappointing performance at The Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy is one of those who arrives at Le Golf National with a real point to prove after what has been such a disappointing year for the 35-year-old, for various reasons. Of course, he was last seen missing the cut at The Open after a very tough couple of days at Royal Troon.

There are very few firsts left for McIlroy to achieve in his career, but winning an Olympic medal is one of those honours missing from his resume – with the four-time major champion missing out on a bronze medal in a play-off three years ago in Tokyo.

McIlroy is representing Ireland again in Paris in the coming days – at a course he knows well, having been a part of the victorious Ryder Cup team back in 2018.

Rory McIlroy tipped for success at the Olympics

There are still question marks over how McIlroy will continue to respond after the disappointment of what happened at the US Open in June. But speaking on Golf Channel, Rex Hoggard believes that he will go on and secure a spot on the podium in Paris.

“I’m going to go with Rory, because going back to Tokyo and how much it meant to him, and he said it, he’s never played so hard for a third place in his life,” he said.

“Of course, he was in on that play-off, trying to get bronze. So I think he would be the one that I would stick with for getting a medal, doesn’t matter what colour, I feel like he’s going to get a medal this time around.”

An important moment in Northern Irishman’s year

This feels like a fantastic opportunity for McIlroy to start the end of his season on a high, particularly as he has won the Tour Championship three times previously.

Nothing is going to take away that disappointment from the US Open until the majors come around again, but winning an Olympic medal would be a real statement of intent after what has clearly been such a difficult time for McIlroy on and off the golf course.
