When it comes to predicting who will win the golf majors in 2025, anyone who looks past Scottie Scheffler for each one is taking a risk but that’s exactly what Ryan Lavner has done.
Scheffler won just the one major in 2024 but also had nine wins and an Olympic Gold overall to complete a Tiger Woods-esque year.
Going into 2025, Scheffler will be keen to win more. Scheffler is currently missing The Sentry through injury but will be back soon enough.
His goal will be to get in the best shape possible for the Masters in April, while the US Open, PGA and Open will be in his sights.
However, when it comes to winning the US Open at Oakmont, not everyone thinks it will be Scheffler’s time.
Jon Rahm tipped to beat Scottie Scheffler to US Open in 2025
Discussing the 2025 majors on their latest Golf Channel podcast episode, hosts Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner got onto the US Open.
And while both suggested big names could win, Lavner went with a LIV Golf star instead of world number one, Scottie Scheffler.
“This is where it all comes home for for Scottie, at Oakmont. You look at the course, the legacy of that course being a brutal test. I’m not sure there’s anyone other than him, when he’s on it, that can make even Oakmont look easy,” Hoggard said.
“I would expect after what happened at Pinehurst, he clearly showed up not prepared for what that test would get him to do and it frustrated him. In his mind, it was a wasted opportunity. I think he comes into this US Open very hungry and ready to play this golf course.”
However, for Lavner, while he agreed Scheffler is a great pick, he believes it is Jon Rahm’s time to shine again on the big stage.
“I’m going to go in a different direction, a LIV player, It will be Jon Rahm,” Lavner said.
“Jon Rahm very much in the prime of his career, 30 years old. He is best suited for this sort of golf course. He is a driving machine that is going to be of paramount importance at Oakmont. And though he had a reputation as being a hot head, to me he’s one of the most mentally strong players and able to channel that energy into a positive spin.”
The major Scottie Scheffler has been told he won’t win in 2025
Backing against the world number one is never easy and while it would be a huge achievement, it also wouldn’t surprise many to see Scheffler win all four majors.
However, while the US Open is a big chance for Scheffler to win, Smylie Kaufman believes Scheffler will be nowhere near the PGA Championship.
“This is the major that I feel the worst about for Scottie. He can win anywhere, and Scottie’s best is probably as good to beat anybody. But I feel the worst about this one than I do about any of the others, and that’s even with a crazy draw at The Open,” Kaufman said.
“I just go back to the Presidents Cup where he was paired with Sam Burns, and Sam had this terrible record and he was the best player at the Presidents Cup that year. Guess who his partner was that week, it was Scottie Scheffler, so I don’t know if there’s any thing to Scottie and Quail Hollow, if he likes it or not. But in my head, I’m thinking have you seen him win there? No. Well, have you seen him win pretty much everywhere? Okay, maybe Scottie Scheffler at Quail Hollow is something, and there’s plenty of guys who have a ton of history there.”
Interestingly, Kaufman picked Rory McIlroy to win the PGA, meaning the Northern Irishman is being backed to finally win major number five.
