Phil Mickelson is very close indeed with YouTube phenomenon Grant Horvat.
The duo have forged a close friendship over the past year or so, with Mickelson dipping his toes into Horvat‘s world of golf content creation.
And the American social media star actually had the chance to move into the six-time major winner’s world as well, when he received an invite to play on the PGA Tour at the Barracuda Championship.
However, Horvat rejected the chance to play the PGA Tour event, due to the fact that he was told that he would not be permitted to have his camera crew follow him around.
Horvat suggested that YouTube golf is what made him, so it wouldn’t have felt right to jump at the chance to play on the PGA Tour, whilst forgetting what gave him the opportunity to do so in the first place.
And now his friend Mickelson has delivered his verdict on the situation.
Phil Mickelson makes comment on Grant Horvat rejecting PGA Tour invite
Mickelson knows all about the thrill of playing in PGA Tour events.
He has competed in and won more than most.

So how does he feel about his good friend turning down the opportunity to play a PGA Tour event?
The 45-time PGA Tour winner was asked to give his thoughts on the Horvat situation.
Mickelson explained: “I’ve really enjoyed playing my matches with Grant. He’s the nicest guy, and he’s been very helpful for me to kind of get into the YouTube space, a space that I don’t really know a lot about. I’m starting to learn — I’m learning from him. I’m learning from Bryson. They’ve been both very, very helpful.“
Mickelson was then pushed by reporters to give an answer on whether he thinks Horvat has made a mistake by rejecting the chance to play at the Barracuda Championship.
He said: “I’m not going to go into the weeds on that. I just really like him.“
Mickelson was clearly not prepared to give too much away, which is fair enough.
I can see both sides of the argument, but I will say that it won’t be too long before we see a YouTube personality play in a PGA Tour event.
It happened two weeks ago on the DP World Tour remember!
Phil Mickelson gets his Open Championship off to a glorious start
Mickelson was in superb form at Royal Portrush on day one, and he posted a round of one-under par 70.
What a great effort that was from the 55-year-old.
Mickelson’s all-round game was in fine fettle.
| Stat | Mickelson’s strokes gained / lost |

| Strokes gained approach | +0.13 |
| Strokes gained around the green | +1.31 |
| Strokes gained putting | +1.99 |

For Mickelson to have gained shots in every single statistical category on day one at The Open was a huge achievement for him.
And he’ll be hoping for more of the same on Friday.
