Of the players currently at the peak of their powers, it is Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy who lead the way when it comes to major championship titles, with the pair boasting nine between them.
Few would have ever imagined after 2014 that Rory McIlroy would go into 2025 still awaiting a fifth major. The Northern Irishman managed to win all four of his between 2011 and 2014. And given that, at that stage, the world had not seen Tiger Woods win a major for six years, it appeared that McIlroy was destined to be the next player to reach double figures.
However, that has not proven to be the case. In fact, he has since been overtaken by Brooks Koepka, who has remarkably won five major titles between 2017 and 2023. Koepka has won a handful of events on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf, but seemed to find a formula which allowed him to peak at the perfect time.
Whether Rory McIlroy or Brooks Koepka will win more majors
It appears that Koepka has more of the momentum, with McIlroy consistently having to deal with questions about how long he has gone without winning one of the sport’s four biggest events. But the 35-year-old did come agonisingly close to winning the US Open at Pinehurst, so it does appear that it is not a foregone conclusion that Koepka will win more majors over their careers.
In fact, when asked on X during a Q&A which of the two would win more majors, Michael Kim suggested that he would opt for the world number three…
Kim may not be a household name, but he is certainly one of the most interesting players on tour – simply because he is not afraid to speak his mind on social media. Kim reluctantly backed the changes coming to the PGA Tour in 2026 despite admitting that he may be one to suffer because of them.
And he provided plenty of insight into his thoughts off the back of his final round of the 2024 season, including whether he would be interested in starting his own YouTube channel, and which two players he would pick to play with for the good vibes…
The crucial moment in the battle between McIlroy and Koepka
It is a fascinating debate discussing whether McIlroy or Koepka will win more majors. Koepka clearly does not have to deal with the mental hurdle of ending a long drought without a major victory.
The key is surely whether McIlroy can get to number five. That will almost certainly open him up completely and potentially set him back onto the path of getting into double figures.
But unfortunately, 2025 will be the 11th season with McIlroy heading into the year with his sights set on that crucial fifth triumph.
