PGA Tour winner explains why he was handed a ‘freaky DQ’ in senior event over the weekend

One PGA Tour winner experienced an unfortunate incident on the PGA Tour Champions last week at the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington.

We have seen numerous players handed penalties this season on the regular PGA Tour.

Shane Lowry was dealt a two-stroke penalty at The Open, after inadvertently causing his ball to move.

While just last week, Michael Kim received a two-stroke penalty at the FedEx St. Jude Championship after taking an incorrect drop.

However, last week it was a player on PGA Tour Champions who fell foul of the rules.

And this time, he wasn’t handed a two-stroke penalty, but was instead disqualified from the tournament.

Greg Chalmers explains ‘freaky DQ’ in PGA Tour Champions event

After two rounds of the Boeing Classic, Chalmers was sitting in the middle of the pack after rounds of 69 and 71 left him on four-under par.

He was then two-under par after eight holes of his third round on Sunday when disaster struck.

Chalmers was disqualified from the Boeing Classic, and he took to X to explain the reasoning behind that disqualification.

The Australian said: “Had a freaky DQ today. Buried in bunker on 3rd, grabbed my lob wedge and hacked it across over off the green on other side. As I’m putting my club back in bag I notice a blast motion sensor attached to the end of it (I’d thought I’d lost it ages ago, but apparently it was in my bag for a while). Talked to the rules officials, they called the USGA and found out it’s a DQ for me for using a non conforming club. On the plus side Steve Allan won again and I caught an earlier flight to Calgary.“

Fair play to Chalmers for spotting the potential breach of the rules and owning his mistake.

He will undoubtedly be more careful in the future when selecting his 14 clubs to play tournaments with.

Chalmers has one regular PGA Tour win to his name – the 2016 Barracuda Championship.

The 51-year-old has only played 36 senior events on the PGA Tour Champions.

Chalmers, from Sydney, Australia, will be confident in his chances of winning very soon on PGA Tour Champions.

His game has been solid this year, if not spectacular, but he does have an age advantage on many of the Tour’s better players.
