The PGA Tour implemented the Signature Event model in 2023, and there has been a mixed reaction from the players regarding the system.

Initially branded as ‘designated events’ two years ago by the PGA Tour the eight tournaments in 2025 drew huge attention from fans, with much excitement surrounding the best players in the world going head-to-head on many occasions throughout the season.

However, some players were simply not fans of the model.

The system does appear to be slightly flawed, in the sense that players like Rickie Fowler received numerous invites into Signature Event fields.

It does seem slightly unfair that Fowler actually ended up qualifying for the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship as a result of his T-15 and T-7 finishes at the Truist Championship and The Memorial Tournament respectively.

Meanwhile, other players of similar calibre to Fowler were not afforded the luxury of playing in as many Signature Events in the first place.

And now one PGA Tour player has called for a complete revamp of the system.

Jake Knapp calls for total revamp of the PGA Tour’s Signature Event model

Over the past couple of years, Jake Knapp has been one of the most exciting players to watch on the PGA Tour thanks to his explosive power off the tee.

Knapp, 31, finished in 55th position on the FedEx Cup points list this season, and just missed out on the BMW Championship at Caves Valley as a result.

But does he think he deserved more out of the 2025 season?

When speaking on GOLF’s Subpar podcast, Knapp was asked if he is a fan of the Signature Event model on the PGA Tour.

He said: Not really. I don’t think it’s wrong, I think the good players are the good players and the guys who aren’t, aren’t. But I think sometimes you have the one guy who maybe played his way into an elevated event and then back doors a seventh placed finish and all of a sudden they are 11th on the points list and you’re like what the heck just happened.

I don’t think there is a perfect system. I don’t think we have quite found that and that’s why it is changing so much year to year.

I think we have to look at it and revamp everything and really look at what we are doing.

Jake Knapp says what he ‘hates’ about the FedEx St. Jude Championship

Not only is Knapp not a fan of the Signature Event model, but he’s not keen on how the FedEx Cup points system is heavily weighted towards the playoff events either.

It’s strange. It’s like it’s probably the only tournament all year where you are okay with not winning. It’s like the only event where you are like 15th is great this week just because of what it does for you the following year. I hadn’t been hitting my irons all that well towards the end of the year and unfortunately that course is a mid-iron on every single hole, so it just outed me on that.

But it’s just a totally different mindset going into that week. You don’t really think about the 50 number because it can change so much based on who is tied with who, but if anything about that week, I just hate the fact it’s 4x points.

Last year I was 57 or 58 going into that event and if it wasn’t 4x points I would finish top 50 and this year it’s the exact same thing.

It’s like it’s not really a season-long race. The same thing with the Tour Championship. It’s not a season long race if it just comes down to who wins the final event.

Do we just care about excitement around one event or rewarding who played the best for an entire season?

It’s a good point from Knapp, but other players argue that the challenge is finding a way of getting your game to peak around the playoff events.

As is the case in life in general, not every single person will be pleased when change occurs.

However, the majority of players and fans are on board with the Signature Events and FedEx Cup playoff system, so it probably will not be changing any time soon.
