The Tour Championship is well underway, and Scottie Scheffler is on course to land golf’s most lucrative prize for the first time.

The world number one, however, hasn’t been best pleased during the season-ending playoffs.

Scheffler angered fans by suggesting the current FedEx Cup format is “silly” and unrepresentative of the season-long race. The 28-year-old’s frustrations stem from only being given a two-shot at East Lake.

Rory McIlroy disagreed with Scheffler’s comments and praised the current system, which provides opportunities for all 30 men in Atlanta.

Golf Channel pundit Brandel Chamblee, however, believes a change to the current format could be on the horizon.

Brandel Chamblee predicts match-play to be introduced at the Tour Championship

Chamblee, speaking on the Golf Channel on Friday, can envisage sweeping changes occurring to the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship.

“Should there be another iteration of this, yes, and I think there will be, I have no doubt,” Chamblee explained. “It will have some format of match-play.

“They’ll have to figure out a way to get everyone here to compete in a medal-play scenario because you don’t just want two players out there.

“You want all the best players playing. But in some capacity, there will be a match-play element to this, I have no doubt.”

Match-play could be fairer for Scottie Scheffler

A match-play scenario could be manipulated in a way which would benefit the most successful player during the regular PGA Tour season.

A more attractive product would be potentially giving Scheffler a free pass into the latter stages while the rest of the top 30 battle it out around East Lake.

Of course, there will be those who suggest match play is better suited to specific types of players, but something needs to change to prevent the FedEx Cup from stagnating in the coming years.
