The Farmers Insurance Open ended with Harris English winning this weekend but the bigger picture seems to have been around the lack of stars in contention and the TV coverage.

After 18 players pulled out of the Farmers, there was a distinct lack of star power, with all three of the world’s best players part of the 18 not to feature.

In the end, Harris English ended up being the man to seize on the opportunity and as he held off Sam Stevens and Andrew Novak to win by a stroke.

However, while English can be happy with his win, it’s been pointed out once again about the lack of star power on the TOUR, amid dwindling TV ratings.

And now, PGA Tour player Byeong Hun An has suggested that players could jump ship for YouTube if things carry on.

Why PGA Tour players could quit to be YouTubers

With so much golf to consume now for the average fan, sitting through a hole event without the big names like Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy is hard work.

The topic of YouTube golf comes up a lot, with many golf fans now choosing to digest content on there rather than tune into the PGA’s events.

And commenting in response to journalist Kyle Porter’s suggestion that YouTube is better for fans due to its shorter form nature, Byeong Hun An has suggested players could quit if the trend isn’t reversed.

Whether there was an element of sarcasm in Hun An’s post here, only he will know. But he makes a valid point, with the comment about Tiger Woods being as prevalent now as it was 20 years ago.

LIV Golf may have shown the PGA Tour the way by signing Rick Shiels

The PGA Tour has long been criticised for not tapping into the content creator community enough.

They have made inroads in recent times by starting up the Creator Classic and getting involved in that way but many feel they’re not doing enough to co-exist and build on those fans.

Indeed, fans slated the TOUR for not showing YouTube star Wesley Bryan at the Farmers and it does beg the question of why?

Worryingly for the PGA, LIV Golf have signed Rick Shiels as well, which brings nearly three million subscribers to their own product and shows a unique link up.

The PGA Tour will do well to keep a close watch on how that goes for Shiels and LIV and in the end, they might have to follow suit and get their own link ups sorted.

As it stands, things are continuing to go south for the PGA and unless things change, golf fans will continue to be turned off.
